Madagascan Comet Moth

(Argema mittrei)

A spectacular preserved Madagascan Comet Moth, hand-mounted in a framed display designed to showcase its extraordinary size, color, and sweeping tail extensions.

This is an exceptionally high-quality specimen, with beautifully intact wings, vivid coloration, and the dramatic form that makes the Madagascan Comet Moth one of the most sought-after moths in natural-history collections.

Each specimen is one-of-a-kind.

Description

Few moths have the visual presence of the Madagascan Comet Moth.

Its enormous yellow-green wings are marked with rich eye spots, warm reddish-brown detailing, and extraordinarily long tails that create an unmistakable silhouette.

This specimen is particularly beautiful, with excellent wing condition, strong coloration, and a clean, balanced presentation that allows the intricate details of the moth to stand out.

The sheer size of the Comet Moth makes it a natural statement piece. Unlike smaller framed butterflies and moths, this specimen commands its own space and immediately becomes the focal point of a display.

Carefully preserved and mounted by hand, each piece highlights the natural shape of the specimen while keeping the presentation clean and gallery-inspired.

Its soft yellow-green coloring and warm eye markings pair beautifully with both darker specimens and more colorful butterflies, although it easily carries a display entirely on its own.

These natural differences are part of the character and authenticity of each piece.

Specimen

Madagascan Comet Moth

(Argema mittrei)

The Madagascan Comet Moth, also known as the Madagascan Moon Moth, is a giant silk moth native to the rainforests of Madagascar.

It is one of the world's largest silk moths and is especially famous for the extraordinarily long tails of the males, which can extend far beyond the wings and create the species' dramatic comet-like appearance.

Its pale yellow-green wings are decorated with distinctive eye spots and warm reddish-brown markings, while feathery antennae add another layer of intricate detail.

Found naturally only in Madagascar, Argema mittrei is one of the most recognizable and impressive moth species in natural-history collections.
